Notices

Well unlike some people who post daily notices up, I rarely update my page and hence there is no point really. But I suppose I can stick one or two things in here which is worthy of my memory? You can go back to my mainpage now if you want to.

30 November, 1997

Christchurch Regatta cancelled. This is seriously disappointing. Have a look at my rowing page for links to our Christchurch crews.

31st October, 1997

WOW my page seriously needs updating. I have finally put a link to a guestbook server that works now, o please sign it, and mail me if you have any comments.

It finally dawned on me that I am a finalist now and not only do I have to start to do some work (to catch up with last two years' work) and to think about what I am going to do after I graduate (if I graduate). However I am still tied down by this rowing thing, or to put in more truthfully, I quite like being tied down by this rowing thing actually. Though organizing outings and crews is more difficult than I thought it would be.

Sarah Nelmes has resigned as Captain and no longer rows in my boat, so I rarely see her nowadays except when we coach our novice crew. I shall miss her in the stroke seat tremedously -- unless next term!

18th June, 1997

We went out this morning and it was particularly painful as we haven't had an early morning for quite a while. We haven't been training properly (you call two outings a week proper??) and it is a bit worrying that Henley is only two days away. Bumps Supper tonight, so it should be fun doing pieces tomorrow morning.

16th June, 1997

What a load of bollocks I have written in my earlier notices. I indeed was drunk I am sure.

Right so what has happened since one year ago? Loads I suppose, but sticking to the rowing theme, we have improved a lot this year. Our Torpids crew rowed over all four days (as did the 3 crews ahead of us), staying 4th in the top division. Our Eights crew (crew list can be found on my Rowing Page) did marvellously well, bumping Brasenose, Somerville, Hilda's and Pembroke to get blades and come 4th in the top division. We are undoubtedly the fastest and strongest women's crew on the river, yes, even faster than that entity known as "Osler-Green", which we were in no position to bump. But it would be interesting to see them thrashed in Henley, possibly quite early on in the day but if not then definitely by Imperial (my old college) at some time or other. Oh by the way you can get to the Imperial Boat Club page (and the Queen's Tower boat club page) by clicking here.

We sent half of the crew (3 of them first years) to Reading Amateur Regatta and won the Novice coxed Four comfortably. With a different stoke, we entered the S3 category on Sunday and was narrowly beaten bu Furnival, the eventual winnner. This coming weekend we are going to Henley Women Regatta with a crew consisting of 6 members of our Summer Eights crew and two who rowed in the Seconds in Eights.

Wadham women rowing has always been strong and we are going to build on our success. Next year we plan to improve the standard of the whole squad and have a strong second and possibly a third crew, brought up to our current First Eight standard. We shall be doing more external regattas. Watch this space.

8th June, 1996, very early morning

Wahey!! We won our class in Oriel Regatta!!! Beat Christchurch in the first round by three lengths at least (and we dropped our pressure to about three quarters, rating to 27 halfway through as there was simply no point in exerting ourselves too much). St John's didn't appear in the second round as they were obviously too scared of us. Jesus beat new College, surprisingly, by one and a half lengths, so we ended up against them in the finals. We beat Jesus easily, by some two lengths, again we went down to three-quarter pressure halfway down the river. Perhaps I should mention here that the course was only that of Christchurch regatta, so two lengths is a considerable difference.
We proceeded to claim our trophies (tankards wahey!!) but noone knew where they were, Oriel is so organized you see, so we ended up going to their college to get them... but apparently they are not ready till Sunday. No matter.

We were going to do Reading regatta too but forgot to enter... we were also going to go to Henley but Kath has to go to the states on 23 June... pity that....

It is pouring outside, thundering like mad, and lightning strikes every two seconds or so. I love the rain, but come on!! You can fry if you are struck by lightning!! Some very mad people (typical of Wadhamites actually) were running around the backquad with barefeet, as if possessed by some spirit... I was overwhelmed by this urge to join them, but as soon as I stepped outside with my sandals and shorts on, I suddenly remembered that I was wearing the only clean pair of shorts left, and I need them for tomorrow's race, so I resigned myself to sipping Castlemaine in front of the terminal instead...

I am going through a very strange mode lately, I don't know why that is for sure. I hate changes of any sort, especially the change from a leisurely term of rowing to the end of rowing season and the commencement of exams.... Holy... I am losing 6/8 of my crew for chrissakes!! I am also losing 4/4 of my other crew!!
Why am I constantly thinking about rowing... sad sad sad, I am not even a rower. though of course, coxes have superior minds!! At least I would like to think so.
Flipped through a wonderful book called "Pooh and the philosophers" today, it is great!! Yeah and I gotta create some links to some pooh sites too I guess.
this sounds like talking to myself, which I am I suppose, afer all there is no-one else around at this hour!! everyone else is drunk and so am I.

8 June, late afternoon

The men's second eight won their category in Oriel regatta! Having decided to be safe and use blades instead of cleavers (as we had only been out once and never with cleavers), we had a short warm up and learned how to do a start.... raced against Worcester in the first round (or should I say we rowed in front of them?) we waited at the start for our opponent in the second round. Turned out that it was St. Hugh's, and not New College as we thought.... so we did our start, winding up to 35 and striding at 35 (oh ho ho), never did a push, went down to rating 28 at the boat houses, and half pressure past WCBC, efficiently creating a three-length gap between is.

For the finals we thought we were going to race against Oriel Second Eight (cheeky for them to enter a junior race eh?) but realized that Oriel was actually in the championship race and we had Magdalen as our opponents instead. They had Cleavers, true, and technique more or less. Wadham had neither, but we did have the horsepower!! (horses the bunch of them) thus effectively staying five feet behind them most of the way (staggered start of half a boat length). A huge cruiser came out of nowhere along the way, both boats steered round it, magdalen steering straight back after avoiding the cruiser, thus resulting into a collision of blades (we rowed towpath side) and our stroke-man Jon Howell missing a couple of strokes, but ironincally enough this is when we started gaining and we crossed the finish line about three feet ahead of them...
Must say I didn't expect the boat to go past the first or second round at all but the guys rowed very well, and we came together about half an hour before the races... It took a lot of persuasion to get Jon to wind up to more than 35... he likes rowing at 13 you see.... But well done, Wadham!!

9 June, 96 late night

Apparently Wadham women's second eight won their category too? They beat Magdalen, like the men's second eight did, in their finals. Wadham is indeed one of the best rowing colleges overall!! In the Oriel Regatta the non-first crews all show that they can be just as good as, if not better, than the elite crews. After all, it was them who got the tankards wasn't it?

I didn't wake up till 3:00 p.m. today, it was the first Sunday in ages I didn't have to row, so I thought I should have a good lie-in. After then I spent a lot of time in the computer room trying tp teach someone how to use pine......

Must go down to London now to retrieve a few essential books for revision from home. Will be back tomorrow evening though
